Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund (HHRF)

HHRF is part of the Greater Houston Community Foundation, and was set up by Mayor Sylvester Turner and County Judge Ed Emmett to provide Houston-area relief. They have already raised more than $29 million for relief services in the region. They provide shelter and temporary housing, food and supplies, healthcare, transportation, child care, social services, and other approved purposes. The fund is designed to fill the gaps that are locally vital, but overlooked by other local and federal relief efforts. 100% of money raised by the HHRF go to immediate and long-term relief efforts, with no fees or other charges for administration of the fund.

Houston Foodbank

The Houston Foodbank provides nutritional assistance to families and individuals in need, a vital service when dealing with the disruptions in housing and employment that are inevitable following a disaster of this magnitude. The Foodbank is the 2015 Foodbank of the year (awarded by Feeding America), and every single $1 provides a full DAY of meals for those in need in the Houston area. The Houston Foodbank has a 100/100 rating on Charity Navigator, the highest possible rating. 96.2% of all donated funds go directly to those in need.

Islamic Relief USA

This Muslim organization has a special disaster relief team that draws on the vibrant Islamic community in the Houston area. Their relief efforts have received a 92.92 rating through Charity Navigator, with 89% of donations going to those in need. They have worked to set up and manage shelters in the area, including work on the Dallas Convention Center “mega shelter.” In addition to direct aid the IRUSA disaster relief team has provided training for other volunteers to share skills and expertise.

Portlight Inclusive Disaster Strategies

Portlight is an inclusive disaster relief organization that focuses on assisting people with disabilities that have been affected by Harvey. They work with local government and disability organizations to provide needed help for those with disabilities whose needs may include large-scale medical equipment, special housing, and other specific needs.
